Rural women, Cocoa farming, Gender equality; Amazon.
Women play crucial roles at every stage of the cocoa value chain. However, their contributions are often underestimated and the challenges they face are poorly understood. The central objective of this study is to analyze the profile of women managers of cocoa bean production units, aiming to understand their socioeconomic characteristics and production systems and the challenges they face. The research was conducted in the municipalities of Altamira, Brasil Novo, Medicilândia and Uruará, in a panel format, with the most recent data collection carried out between July and August 2023. Structured questionnaires were applied to couples who were heads of families or individuals indicated as the more knowledgeable about production and domestic aspects, using the Survey 123 application integrated with ArcGIS software to facilitate recording responses. Furthermore, the majority identified themselves as brown, reflecting the ethnic-racial characteristics of the region. Analysis of this data is being in-depth to provide a comprehensive view of the profile of women in the cocoa chain in the region. It is also intended to identify the main challenges faced by these managers, their leadership strategies and the impact of their actions on the efficiency and sustainability of production units. The expected results will provide input for policies and practices that promote gender equity and sustainable development in the context of cocoa bean production units.
