SUMMARY:

This study analyzed changes in land use and land cover in the municipalities of Thailand, Moju, Acará, Tomé-Açu, Bonito and Concórdia do Pará. The objective of the present study was to analyze changes in land use and land cover in municipalities with the largest area of oil palm in the state of Pará. For this, geoprocessing techniques were used, using MAPBIOMAS data, from the period from 1985 to 2022. The results allowed us to conclude that these municipalities correspond to 89% of the area (ha) destined to oil palm production in the entire state of Pará.The areas destined for oil palm began to increase around the year before the creation of the PNPB, but its expansion had its real "BOOM" after the creation of the PSOP. Comparing the year 2004 with the last year of the study, 2022, the increase in the area of oil palm was 260%. Regarding the change in land use, it is possible to observe that the area destined to pasture presents a significant increase for some years, but with the creation of the PSOP it can be noted that this area remains constant over the years, and the area destined to oil palm only tends to increase. Another crucial point is in relation to the Forest, for many years its area presents a considerable decrease, after the stimulus of public policies, it is noted that there is a gradual decrease of this decrease, and after the launch of the PSOP that the area destined to the forest starts to have a much smaller reduction. The GDP has increased every year in the municipalities under study. It is noted that the government's incentive in relation to oil palm cultivation has a great influence on this indicator, as it is observed that in the years after the creation of the PSOP, the GDP of the municipalities under study showed a significant percentage increase from one year to the next. Oil palm stands out in relation to permanent and temporary crops in the period from 2011 to 2021, that is, it is possible to detect that many areas destined for other crops started to be destined for oil palm cultivation. In summary, it is possible to conclude that the data, together with geoprocessing techniques, provide important tools to detect and monitor changes in land use and land cover during the study period.
