SUMMARY:

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is the most commercialized leafy vegetable worldwide, and its consumption is predominantly "in natura”. In Brazil, there is a predominance of the crisp type of lettuce. However, this crop comes from temperate climates, presenting some production and development limitations in regions that have temperatures above 30 °C. Among the limitations caused by hyperthermia in lettuce, early blossoming stands out, which is triggered by HSP (heat shock protein) genes and significantly reduces the production and quality of lettuce. In this sense the mineral nutrition is highlighted to enable the physiological and biochemical response to stresses, where the magnesium nutrient (Mg 2+ ) has its performance emphasized, especially in combating abiotic stresses, due to its contribution in the activation of enzymatic and non-enzymatic complexes.
Therefore, the project aims to characterize and select lettuce cultivars under heat stress conditions in the greenhouse, as well as to evaluate the attenuation of hyperthermia by the adequate supply of Mg 2+ in nutrient solution. To this end, three experimental trials will be conducted. The first will evaluate the tolerance of crespa type lettuce cultivars, aiming to identify genetic materials sensitive and tolerant to early peaking, as well as their quality and development. In the other experiments, the effect of high temperatures as a function of Mg 2+ supply in nutrient solution will be evaluated for lettuce plants grown in a BOD growth chamber (acute stress) and in a greenhouse (chronic stress). At the end of this project, it is expected to classify cultivars as to their sensitivity to hyperthermia and early leaf setting, to identify the optimal dose of Mg 2+ in nutrient solution that induces greater resistance to these problems and increases the production of lettuce, as well as to elucidate the
mechanisms involved in the interaction of Mg 2+ and heat stress.
