RESUMO:

Jambu is a non-traditional vegetable produced in states that make up the Brazilian Amazon, having a greater productive impact in the State of Pará, where it currently has great influence on the gastronomic culture of the region. Its conventional cultivation occurs in soil, where, it is emphasized, that phytosanitary problems have considerably reduced the production and the quality of plants in the cultivation areas. Thus, it is necessary to introduce jambu to cultivation systems such as hydroponics, without using the soil, which has advantages such as higher productivity and quality. In addition, little is known about the nutritional dynamics of this culture in this system, as well as its behavior in the face of variations in nutrients in the nutrient solution, especially regarding nitrogen (N) supplementation, since it is related to increased productivity and quality of leafy vegetables. Because of this, the monitoring of N content in plants by means of the SPAD index has been widely used in several cultures as it is a cheap, fast and invasive method. n this sense, in order to evaluate the productive response and the quality of jambu in hydroponics, independent experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with eight replications. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, in the Soil Science Area at UFRA in  Belém-PA. In the first, the objective was to evaluate the efficiency of the use of the SPAD index to estimate the content of N and total chlorophyll in the jambu leaves, as well as its relationship with the accumulation of biomass due to the elevation of nitrogen concentration in the nutrient solution. The following characteristics were determined: N content and N accumulation, total chlorophyll, SPAD index and leaf dry matter accumulation. For the second, it aimed to evaluate the growth, production and postharvest quality of jambu plants grown in hydroponics in response to variation in nitrogen concentration in the nutrient solution (11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21 mmol N L). The variables analyzed were the length of the main stem, diameter, leaf area , number of inflorescences, fresh and dry mass of the aerial part, fresh and dry mass of the root, fresh and dry mass of the inflorescence, soluble solids ( SS), pH, titratable acidity (TA) and the SS / TA ratio. In general, the variables were explained by linear models. There was a linear and positive correlation between the SPAD index and the N content, total chlorophyll and the accumulation of biomass. The SPAD index has the potential to be used to diagnose the nutritional status of N and the content of chlorophylls in jambu leaves. The concentration of 21 mmol N L-1 in the nutrient solution provided a better response in terms of growth, production and post-harvest quality in the jambu.
