RESUMO:

Jambu is a leaf vegetable, widely used in the northern region, in both typical dishes and medicinal herb. Its taste is quite peculiar, and the flowers produce a tingling and numbing sensation in the mucous membranes of the mouth due to the presence of the spilanthol substance. In recent years, vegetables have gained both the domestic and international markets, but its production is still concentrated in small properties near the capital of Pará. Despite all its importance, the cultivation of jambu in the northern region needs in-depth research on management and fertilization in order to increase its production and quality. In this sense, the general aim of the first chapter was to evaluate the effects of liming and nitrogen fertilization on the growth, yield and physiological performance of jambu varieties. In the second chapter, the objective was to evaluate the postharvest quality of jambu varieties submitted to liming and nitrogen doses. For this, the experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions at the Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia - UFRA, from February to March; and from April to May 2019. The treatments consisted of liming doses (0 and 70% V) and six nitrogen doses (0, 60,90,120,150,180 kg N ha-1) with five repetions and in randomized blocks. Liming improved the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization in jambu varieties. The dose of 150 kg N ha-1 was more suitable for the yellow flower jambu, and this variety obtained the best results for production and gas exchange. Liming combined with the 120kg N ha-1 dose improved the postharvest quality of the varieties and doses higher than 180kg ha-1 reduced the amount of photosynthetic pigments in the jambu.
