SUMMARY:

Large projects of economic activities, such as mining, when developed in a region cause impacts that directly affect the economic, social and environmental environment, changing the dynamics of the local economy, the land cover and the socio-cultural profile of the population. For this reason, research that evaluates these impacts is important for a better understanding of the issues involved in the installation of these projects and their consequences. Based on this, the research aims to evaluate the spatio-temporal dynamics of agriculture in the municipality of Canaã dos Carajás, after the installation of mining projects and identify weaknesses and potentialities to serve as subsidies for public policies, in addition to identifying opportunities for insertion in the market of local agricultural products. The methodology used was based on the use of geoprocessing through satellite images, survey of official secondary data on the economy of Canaã dos Carajás, as well as socioeconomic and productive information of rural producers, through the application of questionnaires and field observation. The results showed that agricultural production in the municipality in recent years has lost ground due to mining activity, evidenced by changes in land cover and socioeconomic indicators. The data collected showed that producers have the aptitude and interest in diversifying and/or increasing their production, with the insertion of new products and technological improvements. However, despite the provision, they still face difficulties such as lack of technical assistance, difficulty in accessing rural credit due to inefficiency of land regularization, access to water in periods of drought, among others. Considering the history of agricultural activity in the municipality, the need for economic diversification, and production and market potential, agricultural activity can resume its economic importance in the municipality, through public policies that foster its development.
