SUMMARY:

There are no studies on the characteristics of manganese (Mn) mining by-products in the southeastern Amazon, and this information can be essential for the development of reuse technologies. The objectives of this study were to characterize the chemical properties, granulometry, and mineralogy of Mn mining by-products from the Azul mine and to determine the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Therefore, materials from the extraction (sterile) and processing (tailings) of Mn ore were collected, as well as soils from native forest, which was used as a reference area. The concentrations of barium (Ba), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) were extracted using acid digestion and quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The pH was lower in the forest soil and in the tailings compared to the sterile material. Cation exchange capacity and organic matter contents were higher in the forest soil than in the by-products. The granulometry was sandy loam in the forest soil, very clayey in the sterile, and clayey in the tailings. The concentrations of Cu and Mo were the highest in all the materials studied. In the sterile and tailings, all elements presented concentrations above the reference area. The elements Ba and Pb had higher enrichment factors, contamination factors and geoaccumulation indices, especially in the tailings. The results of this study may contribute to the development of techniques for reusing Mn mining by-products, mainly by improving the properties of these materials, reducing the amount deposited and enhancing the restoration processes of disturbed areas.
